<br />
So, of course, I'm pulling out some of my purple works to bring to the show!<br />
<br />
Some are "new", in that I haven't had them in any shows yet, while some may look a little familiar.<br />

There's something about angles creating interesting negative space options, along with the way a figure can change when viewed from a different angle that I'm finding completely fascinating right now.<br />

<br /></div>
<div>
I've been exercising my lifelong fascination with shapes and how they can fit together. I've also been experimenting how multiple pieces can fit together. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Of course, I still like octopi. </div>

I'm finding that one of the things that I find really fascinating in pottery is playing with contrasts. I'm also full of "but what if". </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The "but what if" is one of the places where science and art share a common ground. A lot of good things come out of asking that question. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A while ago, I saw a demo on inset throwing. It piqued my interest. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vFP8pDw-ngw/WuH2Uy0EMPI/AAAAAAAADG0/J1O7htuy0tgfaiN77FRb15u_K2Xu5Q_MgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_2236.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1256" data-original-width="1600" height="500" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vFP8pDw-ngw/WuH2Uy0EMPI/AAAAAAAADG0/J1O7htuy0tgfaiN77FRb15u_K2Xu5Q_MgCKgBGAs/s640/IMG_2236.JPG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Clay: MB with Buff w/ Ochre<br />Decoration: Light Celadon<br />Firing: Cone 10 Gas Reduction</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But, what if the insets weren't equally spaced out? What if they were all on one side?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kA-HVpo4ERI/WuH2xTxEx-I/AAAAAAAADG8/k0ki1LaCB_wb_c03BDZ1txPxs4TM7MwawCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_2239.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="972" data-original-width="1600" height="387" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kA-HVpo4ERI/WuH2xTxEx-I/AAAAAAAADG8/k0ki1LaCB_wb_c03BDZ1txPxs4TM7MwawCKgBGAs/s640/IMG_2239.JPG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Clay: Buff w/ Ochre with MB<br />Decoration: Light Celadon<br />Firing: Cone 10 Gas Reduction</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Honestly, I think having all of the insets on one side makes it more interesting. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Also, funny story time. In trying to figure the best dip on the vase above, I decided to try using tongs. Big mistake - the tongs slipped a little coming out of the glaze, and the vase got really wedged. With a bit of assistance I was able to get the thing freed, and fortunately no damage resulted. </div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm not 100% convinced the way I used the underglazes and stains was really the right decoration for this pot, but it is quirky. I think the problem is that there's already a lot going on with the various angles, and the extra blue is fighting that. At some point I'm going to revisit this form, but look at only using two color elements. </div>

<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FtoKumbMQM4/Wjxpb52FVQI/AAAAAAAACas/V3g63iTRsCQUR8Vhq09LRhi7tl0jqbGogCPcBGAYYCw/s1600/Podcast%2BCover%2Boption%2B4-correct.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1400" data-original-width="1400" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FtoKumbMQM4/Wjxpb52FVQI/AAAAAAAACas/V3g63iTRsCQUR8Vhq09LRhi7tl0jqbGogCPcBGAYYCw/s320/Podcast%2BCover%2Boption%2B4-correct.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After delay caused by the dueling schedules of Eric and myself, the next episode of Tangential Parenting is up and ready for listening! When we sat down to record, the idea was to talk about gardening with kids, since I've done a little bit with Miss Mads and Eric is planning to include his two sons in the process this coming summer. When it came to the actual recording, well, we lived up to the name of our podcast! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Eventually we do discuss what we intended to cover, but we get there through a few side discussions, such as the weirdness of Eric's beard and which Game of Thrones character is the Jar-Jar Binks of that universe. You know, the important questions. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There's a bunch of stuff that got edited out so that we could maintain our family-friendly rating, but it's still (at least in my opinion) our funniest episode to date. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You can find the episode at a number of your favorite podcast platforms:</div>

I haven't written about it yet, but Dr Co and I visited Windsor Castle when we were in London. There, there were some gorgeous displays of various state china that had been either commissioned or given as gifts. Unfortunately, pictures were not allowed, but some of the pieces are listed on the <a href="https://www.royalcollection.org.uk/collection/near-you/windsor-castle#/place/682653">castle website</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The various dessert stands and their basket qualities left me inspired. I needed to make a ceramic breadbasket!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, I did, and it actually turned out.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Honestly, there's no way this piece should have worked. Let's be honest - there's a reason you don't see many braided or woven pieces. It very nearly didn't. The dark blue part above is on a place where the clay had cracked slightly, requiring a little bit of fix work in the bisque state. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GFtZ11C_6HE/WtfIGAeHI4I/AAAAAAAADFE/JuCbyjuFCecNZk5CdBa_zPypsqJ6OY9PQCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_1556.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="961" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GFtZ11C_6HE/WtfIGAeHI4I/AAAAAAAADFE/JuCbyjuFCecNZk5CdBa_zPypsqJ6OY9PQCKgBGAs/s400/IMG_1556.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The rim of the piece is matte because the piece was fired upside-down. This way, I didn't have to work on shaping a flat bottom. When clay fires, it relaxes a bit, so why not use it to my favor. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Keep in mind that if you're ever invited to a nice dinner at my house, you're going to be served bread. For the amount of effort (and procrastination in glazing it because I was afraid I was going to mess it up somehow) I put in in making sure this thing made it through, it's going to get used!</div>

The various keeps and buildings of the Tower circle around the center point - the White Tower. The wooden staircase leads up to the entrance. If you look closely, you can see the top of a doorway mostly obscured by the staircase. </div>

Inside that visually obscured doorway is a blocked off staircase. If you able to follow it upwards, you would be led to the Chapel of St. John. This staircase is where the skeletons of two children were found in 1674. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The 2 sons of the deceased King Edward IV, heir Edward V (12) and Richard (9) were taken to the tower by Edward IV's brother in April 1483 for "safekeeping". A few months later, Edward IV's brother declared himself King Richard III, on the basis that the two sons were illegitimate, and the two princes were never really seen again, which was in no way sketchy.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Anyway, when the two skeletons were found, the assumption was made that they were from the missing princes, and were reburied in Westminster Abbey. In 1933, forensic examination declared the skeletons were of children aged 12 and 10 years. Since then, attempts have been made to get support to re-exhume the skeletons for further testing with more current methods, but there hasn't been enough interest.</div>

Despite the name, the Tower is made up of a number of different small towers that were built at different periods of time, making it into a structure that evolved over the following 1000 years.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mHHagFi9wK0/WrP6IHb8LmI/AAAAAAAAC_4/CLQ9wHuIxx09vcCJ8r0cI0L0qTADkO02QCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_1144.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="901" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mHHagFi9wK0/WrP6IHb8LmI/AAAAAAAAC_4/CLQ9wHuIxx09vcCJ8r0cI0L0qTADkO02QCKgBGAs/s640/IMG_1144.JPG" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The West side of the Tower from what is now the main enterance. The green is the former moat. This wall dates to the reign of Edward I (1272-1307)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First was the White Tower, built over the a former Roman outpost and started during the reign of William the Conqueror. The exact starting or completion dates are unknown, but work was underway during the 1070's. It originally served as a royal residence, though as other monarchs added features on, it became more of a fortress, and, eventually, a prison, which is how it is most commonly depicted in pop culture. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Tower is the place where the sons of Edward IV (aka, the Princes in the Tower) disappeared, Anne Boelyn was imprisoned and executed, and Princess Elizabeth was briefly imprisoned before being released by her sister, Queen Mary I. The last time it was used as a prison was during World War II, when Rudolf Hess was breifly held there. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now, it mainly serves as a major tourist attraction, though even that's been going on for around 600 years.</div>

Did you ever feel that you could hold universes in your hand? Or at least a small solar system?<br />

<br />
Sometimes, what makes a piece interesting isn't where the glaze is, but where the glaze isn't.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Cl_JzOl_f8s/WqqaQ3jV-jI/AAAAAAAAC6A/CDSjHFn0D8g_lWflCW6P7763TUnQ0UujACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_1543.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1560" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Cl_JzOl_f8s/WqqaQ3jV-jI/AAAAAAAAC6A/CDSjHFn0D8g_lWflCW6P7763TUnQ0UujACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_1543.JPG" width="311" /></a></div>
<br />
You can use wax resist or wipe off glaze, but other things work too. If you have a nice contrast between the clay and the glaze, why not show it off?<br />

Have you been craving a new episode of Tangential Parenting? In this episode, Eric (from <a href="http://themodernfather.com/">The Modern Father</a>) and I talk about our experiences with travelling with our tiny adventurers, both via cars and planes. If you want ships and trains, you're going to have to wait a bit. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Also, for the record, I don't hate Iowa. I just have driven through the state enough that I've come to dislike doing so. Whenever I've visited Iowa, I've had a lovely time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Looking down at a base I was working on, I realized I was seeing a Demogorgon from Stranger Things.<br />

So, of course, I had to make it be that way.<br />

William III (also known as the William in William and Mary) was behind a lot of the renovating that created the mishmash of architectural styles in the palace. His desire was use a more fashionable baroque style, but ran out of money before being able to completely re-do the palace. </div>

William III wanted to create a grand entrance up to the King's rooms. The great mural on the walls and ceiling give the impression that you are walking up to heaven while simultaneously making you feel smaller than you really are. Apparently, ruling is all about the mind games. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Aside from the Great Hall, much of the Tudor presence at Hampton Court was renovated away by later monarchs. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This gallery is one of the few remaining rooms. Today, it's known as the "Haunted Gallery", due to reported ghostly sightings. When Catherine Howard was accused of adultery, legend has it that she ran to try to plead her case to Henry VIII who was ensconced in the chapel. She was then stopped and dragged screaming down this hallway. Per the Hampton Court guide, this hallway has more reports of ghost sightings (mainly of a screaming young woman), unexplained noises, and odd feelings than any other place in the palace. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The kitchens from Tudor times are partially accessible, though some was blocked off due to an archaeology project to excavate more. Just outside the food store rooms and kitchens are the Master Carpenter's court and the Seymour Gates, which were used primarily for delivery, since they allowed for easy access to the kitchen without disturbing the more formal areas. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here's the to the kitchens from the store rooms and the first hint of the trouble that the bright sun gave me in photographing. The narrow passage is huge (or small) indicator that this is a place that the public did not usually travel in the times when the palace was in heavy use.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The kitchens that were open for visiting were large, high ceiling-ed rooms with room for large spits, vats, and fires. In corners were tables and other work surfaces. Some changes did happen over the years - originally the kitchen was one large room and used mainly for meat. Over the years, the kitchen was divided into three sections, and implements for making other types of food, such as bread, were added.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hampton Court was another place I was really excited to see in person. I have a bit of a thing for the Tudors, which will become pretty apparent as I write more about the other places we visited. Visiting a place where people lived, died, and were buried makes history more real, at least to me.<br />
<br />
Cardinal Wolsey built Hampton Court into a grand palace, spending great sums of money to do so. In 1528 he gave the palace to King Henry VIII, and he then made even additional investments in building it up. Upon William and Mary gaining the throne in 1689, they started pumping money into grand renovations, rebuilding portions of the castle in a French-inspired baroque style. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), they were unable to completely finish the project, leaving parts of the palace much as how they looked in the days of King Henry. George I and George II were the last monarchs to live (and renovate) in the place, but only mainly made changes to the inside in 1717 and the 1730s.<br />
<br />
Our trip to the palace involved a later start - we decided to sleep in a little - and was on a wonderfully sunny day. As beautiful as the day was, it made photography of certain things a little difficult. We also got to figure out the rail system, which was a bit of an adventure, since the direct train that usually runs from London wasn't, due to some track work. But, thanks to a very helpful rail employee who didn't seem too put out at explaining things to us, pointed us in the direction of the right platform.<br />
<br />
Once we got there, we picked up the really helpful audio/visual guides, finding out later that we were in the first few days of their being available, and headed on to the thing for which I was most excited - the Great Hall of King Henry VIII.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3kgbXGd_5gM/WmVo_1_yr9I/AAAAAAAACug/NGfF8gf2LHU3uiI8K_sjcqjEf_htwh5dwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_1014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1068" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3kgbXGd_5gM/WmVo_1_yr9I/AAAAAAAACug/NGfF8gf2LHU3uiI8K_sjcqjEf_htwh5dwCKgBGAs/s640/IMG_1014.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It was pretty great.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gyN0vx3zFJM/WnIsKCv2boI/AAAAAAAACw8/745UXdqY9SQDHdK0ku5z3ECmKjP7XwpfACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_1016.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1070" data-original-width="1600" height="427" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gyN0vx3zFJM/WnIsKCv2boI/AAAAAAAACw8/745UXdqY9SQDHdK0ku5z3ECmKjP7XwpfACKgBGAs/s640/IMG_1016.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It isn't until you stop and stare at the ceiling that you really get a feel for how detailed the work was that went into the decorations. The small faces up there are called "Eavesdroppers".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iHSmgRPNfMw/WnIs3BHY2qI/AAAAAAAACxE/k059yV1n8NEd4FzUTzKzbq3_kd1Y5ruuACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_1010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1068" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iHSmgRPNfMw/WnIs3BHY2qI/AAAAAAAACxE/k059yV1n8NEd4FzUTzKzbq3_kd1Y5ruuACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_1010.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aqclp-T9_3Y/WnIs3BGEzHI/AAAAAAAACxE/HM_i5IP58TwjSXzws48mXHSwv36sUtU0wCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_1011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1068" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aqclp-T9_3Y/WnIs3BGEzHI/AAAAAAAACxE/HM_i5IP58TwjSXzws48mXHSwv36sUtU0wCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_1011.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
These are the two edges of the archway from a room off of the Great Hall. On one end you see the pomegranates of Katherine of Aragon, on the other you see the Tudor Roses of Henry VIII.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Uid-QrIxIp0/WnIuAOWgPII/AAAAAAAACxQ/JTHoVViq9EInTKSeorX2gISYDD47HZxwgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_1017.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1129" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Uid-QrIxIp0/WnIuAOWgPII/AAAAAAAACxQ/JTHoVViq9EInTKSeorX2gISYDD47HZxwgCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_1017.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
When Anne Boleyn fell from favor, any mention of her was scrubbed from the palace decorations - the exception being one place along the back wall.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uATK-77cglY/WnIut4-NbhI/AAAAAAAACxY/bXcprRxCYB09Z-ybDimXqaF0uSETDqPeQCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_1021.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="956" data-original-width="1600" height="191" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uATK-77cglY/WnIut4-NbhI/AAAAAAAACxY/bXcprRxCYB09Z-ybDimXqaF0uSETDqPeQCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_1021.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Along the tables in the room were placemats with various factoids. I thought this one was interesting.<br />

<br />
After we were done with the Hogwarts Express, the tour path then passed by a snack area, including a place to buy Butterbeer. This was the point when I finally understood why the tour package we used had an option to also pre-pay for Butterbeer. At the point of booking I thought it was a bit odd to pay for it up front - wouldn't we have a chance to do so at the studios? The snack area was MOBBED. There were two lines to buy butterbeer - the very long one that was for people purchasing it there, and a very short one for people who had pre-purchased theirs.<br />
<br />
Alas, we were worried that we wouldn't have enough time to get Butterbeer and be able to do the remainder of the tour in a reasonable fashion, so we moved on to the outside area.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FGWmnyITcX8/WlrojAQG23I/AAAAAAAACp8/GkXxzwpnWksOLsx61D5HCwrKM-5D5lmEwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_0923.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1600" height="248" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FGWmnyITcX8/WlrojAQG23I/AAAAAAAACp8/GkXxzwpnWksOLsx61D5HCwrKM-5D5lmEwCKgBGAs/s400/IMG_0923.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Outside were some of the very large sets, such as Harry's Parents' house (post attack) and Privet drive (which we didn't go in due to time constraints).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The bridge from Hogwarts was also out there. Normally you'd be able to walk through it, but it was closed while we were there.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The chance of Death Eater attack was far too strong.<br />

<br />
We headed inside, and found a number of random props related to costuming and cosmetics. Like Luna's hat.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x66QubwsW8I/WlrpQ12qMfI/AAAAAAAACqQ/kgP3kKdO4DwB6eMxtnDLrFwYcgCZ2jAGgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_0944.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="892" data-original-width="1600" height="178" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x66QubwsW8I/WlrpQ12qMfI/AAAAAAAACqQ/kgP3kKdO4DwB6eMxtnDLrFwYcgCZ2jAGgCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_0944.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And Viktor Krum's shark torso.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-h4ynxKIrYAc/Wlrpcv914rI/AAAAAAAACqU/YsKaVwAiWAQP1RJnIsLAql7mD5cp0rjTwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_0953.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="870" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-h4ynxKIrYAc/Wlrpcv914rI/AAAAAAAACqU/YsKaVwAiWAQP1RJnIsLAql7mD5cp0rjTwCKgBGAs/s400/IMG_0953.JPG" width="217" /></a></div>
<br />
There were also some animatronic-type puppets.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3e6-bOtW0u0/WlrpnGEFSbI/AAAAAAAACqc/6lBODmzXHwkbJk4tFpbM2lHwyq4RLXW1QCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_0955.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1118" data-original-width="1600" height="278" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3e6-bOtW0u0/WlrpnGEFSbI/AAAAAAAACqc/6lBODmzXHwkbJk4tFpbM2lHwyq4RLXW1QCKgBGAs/s400/IMG_0955.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And hats! Tons of hats! One of the ways they made the wizarding world come alive was through unique attention to the various characters in the background.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Jts5Z5uKXiI/WlrpzNeFQlI/AAAAAAAACqg/xW5Azb24rkINRxjBkXEsL_LEjg8Fp_vWwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_0956.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1068" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Jts5Z5uKXiI/WlrpzNeFQlI/AAAAAAAACqg/xW5Azb24rkINRxjBkXEsL_LEjg8Fp_vWwCKgBGAs/s400/IMG_0956.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
We made our way through the last and largest set - Diagon Alley.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-duP3BNKMLoc/Wlrp8szILVI/AAAAAAAACqk/q67scYYgLn4vPjz1eM3FBm0K4tXYjjnZwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_0961.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1068" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-duP3BNKMLoc/Wlrp8szILVI/AAAAAAAACqk/q67scYYgLn4vPjz1eM3FBm0K4tXYjjnZwCKgBGAs/s400/IMG_0961.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It's Ollivanders!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
And Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jDoVeWaCQ0g/WlrqJBdpkZI/AAAAAAAACqw/T4kOgF8vuPgIOcV2T6Vyvlsebaj1lBH0wCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_0969.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1009" data-original-width="1600" height="251" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jDoVeWaCQ0g/WlrqJBdpkZI/AAAAAAAACqw/T4kOgF8vuPgIOcV2T6Vyvlsebaj1lBH0wCKgBGAs/s400/IMG_0969.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
After we exited Diagon Alley, we found a small gallery of various concept art and models.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wCVhEgQZDBI/WlrqTy51OFI/AAAAAAAACq0/rjoLgluX9VwcuN-ht-PIJQwv_O6ZZjNCQCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_0975.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1068" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wCVhEgQZDBI/WlrqTy51OFI/AAAAAAAACq0/rjoLgluX9VwcuN-ht-PIJQwv_O6ZZjNCQCKgBGAs/s400/IMG_0975.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Like the Prefects' Bathroom.<br />
<br />
Then, we came to the most amazing model of all - Hogwarts!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0_PcQSD_k4s/Wlrqgs6ym3I/AAAAAAAACq4/vBZiEilJU_YSG97ifND-DNDwroj6DIM6wCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_0976.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="1600" height="408" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0_PcQSD_k4s/Wlrqgs6ym3I/AAAAAAAACq4/vBZiEilJU_YSG97ifND-DNDwroj6DIM6wCKgBGAs/s640/IMG_0976.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This thing was so large and so detailed, I could have stayed looking at it for hours. A ramp circled downwards around it, allowing for a view of all angles. As you walked around it, the lights gradually changed, simulating the changing of the hours of the day.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dDtYBIrAVIg/Wlrq5Y2A2VI/AAAAAAAACrE/h1hl3YVloWIrMQ8zBime-wXCrHoz2RRPQCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_0988.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1102" data-original-width="1600" height="440" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dDtYBIrAVIg/Wlrq5Y2A2VI/AAAAAAAACrE/h1hl3YVloWIrMQ8zBime-wXCrHoz2RRPQCKgBGAs/s640/IMG_0988.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xmSbqbz6ONk/WlrrEdrpXjI/AAAAAAAACrI/AdY6q1t5WCAfaBIRFnv0gDdzqsOdcfidwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_0994.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1244" data-original-width="1600" height="496" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xmSbqbz6ONk/WlrrEdrpXjI/AAAAAAAACrI/AdY6q1t5WCAfaBIRFnv0gDdzqsOdcfidwCKgBGAs/s640/IMG_0994.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We then exited into the final room.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-I8GiwK3NmjQ/WlrrTaRHRPI/AAAAAAAACrM/4_9jrl6L1h0u7dKmvbrrG8Nh0wjaAAsEgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_1003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1068" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-I8GiwK3NmjQ/WlrrTaRHRPI/AAAAAAAACrM/4_9jrl6L1h0u7dKmvbrrG8Nh0wjaAAsEgCKgBGAs/s400/IMG_1003.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
An interior of a wand shop. There were shelves and shelves of boxes of wands, nearly all with a different name upon it. Each person who worked on a film had a wand box with their name - looking around the thousands of boxes, you could really get a sense of the scale of the number of people who had worked to make the wizarding world a reality. It was pretty cool.<br />
<br />
From there, we exited to the gift shop, did a bit of shopping, then scampered out to the bus for a nauseatingly terrifying ride home. The driver we had on the way back drove the large double-decker bus as if it were a sporty sub-compact.Raehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05126711556189738231noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8147710401798389185.post-3432741529508891622018-01-14T08:00:00.000-08:002018-01-19T19:07:37.939-08:00Leavesden Studios, Part 5<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The carriage they used for filming was really a passenger car, complete with real passenger car dimensions. Passenger car dimensions are fairly small.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There was an open half car that they used for filming, especially if they needed to zoom back a bit. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Did you guess who the luggage cart belonged to? It was Colin Creevey!<br />

One of the things I love about being in a class with many people is that everyone has their own style, and often times things that they do may spark inspiration in someone else. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There's a woman in my class who makes creatures, both living and extinct. Sometimes she adds them to trays. Other people in my class often add little phrases to what they're doing. I was inspired by both, I think, but of course, it has to fit into my personal style. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Apparently my personal style involves tentacles.</div>

Anyway, this is one of the pieces that I'm intending to bring to <a href="https://marscon.org/2018/index.php">MarsCon</a> this March. It will likely be for sale!</div>

Next up was the set for the Headmaster's office. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First up was the entrance. At this point I realized just how much the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios resembles the set. There, you pass by the entrance to the Headmaster's office, and it seemed exactly the same when compared to the "original". </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B1vPqgRDOOc/WlJDnczDx3I/AAAAAAAACmQ/HbML8HTC_Wo_-tXsumpxDo5SuxqjSBwOwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_0832.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1060" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B1vPqgRDOOc/WlJDnczDx3I/AAAAAAAACmQ/HbML8HTC_Wo_-tXsumpxDo5SuxqjSBwOwCKgBGAs/s640/IMG_0832.JPG" width="420" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The office set itself was amazing. There was so much to look at that doesn't even really show in the movies. It has a bit of a split-level setup - behind the desk, under the balcony, is a separate living area that you can *just* see. Dr_Co and I became a little obsessed with trying to figure out if there was actually a bed back there, or if it was just a lounge-type setup. Later, we were able to catch a glimpse of the back (which I wasn't able to photograph) that showed that there was a sleeping area set up. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, I guess if you're wondering where Dumbledore sleeps, that mystery is solved, at least in the movies. Alternately, you could probably make the argument that Dumbledore sleeps wherever he pleases, but I digress.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Near a display on how the quidditch scenes were filmed, I found something to share with my fellow 'Puffs on how to defeat Gryffindor at the next match. Or not, because that wouldn't really be very sporting to stoop to espionage.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<br />
There were various displays showing the different types of effect, and to what degree they were used. Not everything was computer generated! Lupin's trunk was done mechanically!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Another set that was much larger thank it looked in the movies! This is only about 1/3rd of the Burrow set.<br />

<br />
We exited the Great Hall to start the rest of the tour. There was a path to follow, but there was so much to see that there was a lot of zig-zagging. There wasn't always a lot of logical flow from one thing to the next.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

There were some explanations on how some movie effects worked. This was one of the moving staircases that was used for filming. Behind it are a number of the various wizard portraits that lined the halls of Hogwarts.<br />
<br />
Forced perspective was a trick that was used in filming. Small sets are cheaper.<br />
